About Me - Phil Smith
Hey, I'm Phil Smith and I'm happy you landed on my site. In my 19 years as a personal trainer, I've helped hundreds of clients achieve real results - like Neil, who lost 18kg of body fat and gained 8kg of muscle. Most clients start seeing changes within 12 weeks, regardless of their starting point.
I've been qualified since 2006 and moved from England to Perth with my family for that brilliant Perth outdoor lifestyle. As a dad of two young kids, I understand how busy life gets - that's why I create realistic programs that fit into your actual life.
I don't try to be different. I'm just genuine, honest, and relatable. I won't judge you, overwhelm you, or expect you to be perfect! Whether we're training at Arena Joondalup, in my garage gym, or I'm coming to you, it's all about honest conversations and programs that actually work.
I'm here to help you succeed, whatever that looks like for you.

I've never worked with a personal trainer before - what should I expect?
Don't worry, I completely understand those first-session nerves! We'll start with a relaxed chat about your goals, lifestyle, and any health concerns or injuries. There's no judgment here - I just want to understand where you're at and where you'd like to be. Then we'll discuss an action plan that's specific to you and your situation. Think of it as laying the foundation for your success rather than jumping straight into intense workouts.
What if I'm really unfit - will you judge me?
Absolutely not. In my 19 years of training, I've worked with people of all ages and abilities. Everyone starts somewhere, and I'm genuinely excited to be part of your journey, regardless of your starting point. My job is to meet you where you are and help you move forward at a pace that feels right for you. The only thing I'll judge is whether we're making progress together!
I'm worried I'll be too out of shape to keep up.
This is one of the most common concerns I hear, and it's completely natural. The beauty of personal training is that everything is tailored specifically to you. We're not trying to keep up with anyone else - we're focused entirely on your capabilities and gradually building from there. I'd much rather you finish a session feeling accomplished and energised than completely exhausted and discouraged.
How often should I train to see results?
Being as active as possible throughout the week is important for overall health. You can definitely see results from just 2 training sessions per week, especially when combined with staying active on your other days. However, if you're looking for faster results, 4 sessions per week tends to be the sweet spot. The most important thing is consistency - I'd rather see you train twice a week every week than four times a week for a month and then burn out.
How long before I see results?
If you're consistent and disciplined, you'll typically start noticing changes within 12 weeks. However, some improvements happen much sooner - better sleep, more energy, improved mood, and feeling stronger often kick in within the first few weeks. The physical changes we can see in the mirror take a bit longer, but trust me, your body is adapting and improving from day one.
What happens if I miss sessions?
Life happens, and I completely understand that. Consistency is key for results, but missing the odd session is perfectly okay. What matters is getting back on track rather than letting one missed session derail everything. If you're struggling with consistency, let's chat about what's getting in the way - often we can adjust your program or schedule to make it more sustainable.
Do I need to join a gym or buy equipment?
Not necessarily! If your goal is to build significant muscle mass, access to gym equipment will definitely help us get there faster. However, it's absolutely possible to see great improvements using bodyweight exercises, especially when we're starting out. I have equipment at Arena Joondalup, a fully equipped garage gym at my place, and I can bring dumbbells and kettlebells to you for mobile sessions.
Where do you train clients?
I offer three options to suit your preferences: Arena Joondalup (great facility with all the equipment we could need), my home garage gym in Carramar (private, well-equipped space), or I can come to you within a 20-minute drive. We can even train in parks if that appeals to you, though we'd need council permission for regular sessions.
What equipment do you have for mobile sessions?
For mobile sessions, I bring dumbbells and kettlebells, which gives us plenty of options for effective workouts. Combined with bodyweight exercises, we can create challenging and varied sessions wherever we are. If you have any equipment at home, even better - we can incorporate that too.
What if I have an injury or health condition?
As long as your doctor has cleared you for exercise, we can absolutely work around health conditions and injuries. I've helped many clients train safely with various limitations. If you're seeing a physiotherapist, I'm happy to incorporate any specific exercises they've prescribed. The key is open communication - tell me about everything so I can design a program that helps rather than hinders your recovery.
Do I need to get medical clearance before starting?
For most people, no specific clearance is needed. However, if you have ongoing health issues, recent injuries, or take medications that might affect exercise, it's worth checking with your doctor first. I'd rather be overly cautious when it comes to your safety and wellbeing.
